Blueberry Recipes: Pancakes, Scones, Smoothies, Muffins…Yum!

Recently, we just had our town’s Blueberry Festival, which attracted visitors from all over Texas and Louisiana. It’s amazing what they had there, just about the only thing they didn’t have was blueberry drinks. Still, I didn’t miss out, I found this great product to make a snazzy blueberry martini mix that looks just yummy.

Anyway, they start the whole thing off with a blueberry pancake breakfast. I wish I had their blueberry pancake recipe, because they are really, really delicious. They might even be better than my blueberry pancakes, but my son had better not confirm that.

They had blueberries for sale for two bucks a pound. Of course, there was a blueberry pie contest. Some of the people in our town apparently hold the secret to the best blueberry pie recipes ever! The winning blueberry pie recipe has been won by the same woman six years in a row.

Since blueberries are so good for you, I have a variety of recipes that I rely on. I have a fantastic recipe for fat-free blueberry muffins, as well as recipes for blueberry cake (not very low-fat!) and blueberry smoothies. No one can eat just one blueberry muffin, by the way. Each member of my family probably eats around two servings of blueberries a day. The freezer is full of them, so every time I want to make one of my blueberry recipes, I just pull a bag out of the freezer!

So there’ll never be a shortage if I want to pull out my blueberry scone recipe, or whip up a few jars of blueberry jam! (Blueberry jam, yum! Now there’s a recipe that everyone should have!) It tastes great on the blueberry muffins or blueberry scones, of course. You can even spread it on blueberry pancakes. Of course, after you eat, you’ll have a blue tongue, but just think of all the health benefits that blueberries have!

Adios, I Hope!

Sage and I are going on vacation at some point this summer. Today, when he saw how much the electric bill was, he asked me if we were still going to be able to go! Fortunately, the electric bill is not going to be the deciding factor.

Sage is a beach person, and so am I, so we always agree on vacations. Lately, he has been becoming more and more curious about Mexico, since his paternal side is from that country. One place that would be really cool to go is
Rocky Point Mexico. That way, we’d get to combine the beach with exploring a bit of Mexico as well. I’m going to give Sea Side Reservations a call and see what they say, since they have some gorgeous condos to choose from in that area. I think it would be fun to stay in one of the high-rise condos, since Sage has never stayed in a high-rise before. Not that we’ll be in it much, the Puerto Penasco area is just beautiful and there’s a lot to do. We’ll probably just be in the condo to sleep! :-)

Blue Carpet

3:22 pm

I went out on a limb and picked out blue carpet for Sage’s room. It’ll be really cheerful with the yellow walls! It is amazing how expensive carpet has gotten. Two different retailers have told me that it is higher because the price of petroleum is so high and it is a petroleum product. Strangely, cheap plastic toys, which are also a petroleum product, do not seem to be more expensive. Hmm. At any rate, it is hard to pay any amount, being as I’m not thrilled about putting down carpet in the first place. I wish the wooden floors were salvageable!

Put That Little Boy in Some Sparring Gear!

June 17, 2008 4:23 pm

I was talking to my older son the other day about the time he literally climbed the wall. Then there was another time when his friend nearly castrated himself when he fell out of a tree. And there was the time he broke his friend’s collarbone horsing around at the park. Sometimes it seems like it would be a good idea to have all little boys wear
sparring gear, since they enjoy horseplay and other crazy physical activities so much

I know we can’t keep them as safe as we’d like to. I do wish they’d wear more protective gear though. I can’t get my 18 year old to wear his bike helmet. He fell the other day, and scraped up his face. It could have been worse. Even after this happened, he still won’t wear a helmet.

Of course, if he was doing something cool like fighting on American Gladiators, I bet he’d wear some gear. Admittedly, the gear they wear (by AWMA) is way cooler than your average bike helmet.

I still wish he’d wear it.

They Shrunk the Video Stores

June 16, 2008 8:14 pm

At day camp, Sage got to see the first 15 minutes of Honey, I Shrunk the Kids. Since it’s a good movie that I wanted to see too, we went to rent it. Out of three video rentals stores in our town, not one had it! Thank goodness for Half.com. I ordered it for a total of nine dollars (including shipping). We’ll have to wait a week or so, but I’m looking forward to seeing it. Sometimes it seems like some of the best movies are some of the older ones. Although, I’ll take watching Shrek any day as well.

Mexican Yellow

12:11 pm

Yesterday, I hit Sage’s room hard with the paint, a really bright yellow. I painted almost the entire room. I still have to do the trim, though, which is very time consuming. When Sage saw it, he said, “My room looks like a beach!” I thought it looked like Mexico, and said so. “Cool!” was his response. When I asked him if he was proud of being half Mexican, his eyes lit up and he said, “Yes!” with a glow on his face. I wonder what it means to him. That’s a conversation for another day.

Farmer’s Market Ideas

June 14, 2008 11:08 am

Our city’s farmer’s market charges insanely low booth prices. Like five bucks insanely low. I thought it would be fun to make cupcakes, only not the ordinary kind. What I would do is make chocolate and vanilla cupcakes, and decorate them in a very elegant way. Then I would put them in pastry boxes in groups of four and sell the box for five dollars. Would it work? I have no idea. I don’t have time to make purses right now, though, which is something that I’m pretty certain would work…. I can see it now, selling cupcakes out of the back of the minivan…

Wish List

June 12, 2008 10:05 am

Moving into this house has made me quite the consumer. There are several things I want, besides the basics, like working electricity, to make it “perfect”. Like:

a rocking chair for the front porch
a home theater–not really expensive–just decent sound for music more than anything
    a treadmill for the porch
a 6 foot long table to do crafts on–this is totally doable at $50!
art for the walls–this will really “make” the house!
a garden in front–costly to get set up, but economical in the long run, right?
a new computer–this may become a necessity. This is not really a want.

I’d like a big screen tv, but that doesn’t make much sense, because I watch movies about twice a month. As for the stuff the house actually needs? Well, that’s a much longer list…

A Princess Bedroom

June 11, 2008 10:34 am

When the former owners moved out of this house, they left sheer flowing draperies in my bedroom. I moved the bed my grandfather gave me, my armoire, and my soft touch lamp into the room, and it instantly was transformed into the bedroom of a princess! I love it! I also have my Mexican desk set up to put on makeup and do my hair, just like they did it in the old days, before bathrooms got big enough for everyone to hang out at the sink. I think it will be much more leisurely putting on makeup this way. Oh, and did I mention that I have my carved swan chair in there as well? That completes the look. :-)

Turning an Armoire into a Dresser/Closet

June 10, 2008 5:57 am

Finally, the television is out of my armoire. I have hated it being there, because it means the handpainted doors are always open, and the piles of video games and cords are not very attractive. So, with the move, I moved it into my bedroom. This way, it can sit there and look pretty! I bought some fabric bins for clothes that go in drawers, and put up hooks for jewelry, scarves and purses. I’ve also got some pretty paper covered boxes in there that I use to store expensive doodads like my itty bitty camcorder. This works well. I mean, have you ever tried looking for a tiny camera in a largish messy house? It’s not a good thing.

I’m happy with the armoire as it is now.
